Introduction

Languages and Intercultural Studies (LINCS) is one of four departments within the School of Management and Languages. The international reputation of LINCS has been built largely on its specialism - interpreting and translating degrees - which it has offered for over 35 years. LINCS is one of only three UK university departments which have been granted membership of CIUTI, an international body which brings together universities which specialise in translating and interpreter training.

At the last Research Assessment Exercise in 2001 LINCS confirmed the international character of its departmental research in its three focus areas of

  1. Translation and Interpreting (under the auspices of CTISS - Centre for Translation and Interpreting Studies in Scotland)
  2. European and Area Studies
  3. Second Language Acquisition

LINCS is also home to an international research journal and runs regular international conferences ranging from smaller-scale, specialised meetings to major, large-scale events.

Facilities include three state-of-the-art interpreting teaching laboratories, two language laboratories and one self-study laboratory.
