Languages & Intercultural Studies

Languages and Intercultural Studies (LINCS) is based within the School of Management and Languages and the outstanding international reputation of LINCS and its graduates has been built largely on its specialism - interpreting and translating degrees.

For over 40 years LINCS have been producing graduates with international communication skills of the highest quality and communication is the essence of our postgraduate degrees programmes.

With state of the art digital language laboratories, self-study facilities and dedicated postgraduate resources, LINCS provide a first class learning environment in which students are encouraged and supported by LINCS staff to develop their skills and abilities in translating and interpreting.

In addition, LINCS is one of only four UK university departments which have been granted membership of CIUTI, an international body which brings together universities which specialise in translating and interpreter training.

Taught Programmes

With a focus on translating and interpreting our postgraduate taught programmes are specifically designed to meet the needs of those looking to become professional interpreters and translators. The programmes offer training in key translation techniques such as revising, editing, summarising,  and technical writing; and key interpreting skills such as consecutive, simultaneous, and liaison interpreting.

Research

Research in LINCS is grouped under two key areas:

  1. European and International Cultures and Societies looking at the study of societies, cultures, languages and identities
  2. Translation and Interpreting which investigates the processes and practices of translating and interpreting.

Applications from suitably qualified candidates for PhD study are welcomed in these areas.
