Accountancy and Finance

Accountancy and Finance has often been described as the language of business and it has long been recognised that an understanding of accounting, finance and taxation is an essential prerequisite for those who intend to pursue a career in commerce, industry or public administration. The increasingly complex environment within which both financial and international business is conducted and the development and spread of information technology and systems continue to reinforce the need for such an understanding.

We offer a continuing demand for graduates who have specialised in these subjects, the value of such studies is also recognised by professional accountancy and allied societies which offer, to approved graduates, substantial examination exemptions and reduced periods of pre-qualifying service.

Taught Programmes

Our degree programmes build on core subject areas in the discipline, adding a range of specialisms which give our degrees their distinctive features. The core subjects are those seen as essential to meeting broad educational objectives and as providing the maximum available accreditation for professional purposes.

With specialised programmes in Investment Management as well as Finance and International Accounting

Research

Research within Accountancy and Finance includes a wide range of specialisations, and benefits from synergies with other research both within the School of Management and Languages, and the wider University. Research falls broadly into two areas:

  • Accountancy
  • Finance (including the Centre for Finance & Investment)

In accountancy the major research themes of the department are in comparative international accountancy, the history of the accounting profession and the evolution of regulatory frameworks in transition and other developing countries.

In finance research is being carried out in fields of corporate finance such as the cost of capital and governance mechanisms, and also in the structural modelling of financial assets and markets.

Our research is also closely associated with international networks for the dissemination of new developments in their fields of research, both to academic and non-academic audiences.
