School of the Built Environment
Architectural Engineering

Introduction

The architectural engineering discipline is growing in scope and complexity as it strives to provide innovative and environmentally sound solutions for our needs in the built environment. The provision of building services in new and refurbished structures is expensive, both in terms of initial capital outlay and subsequent operation.

There is a short supply of architectural engineers who have a firm base in the engineering disciplines, as well as knowledge of the constraints imposed upon engineering design by the technological, financial and human aspects of building. This course deals with classical services engineering issues by providing solid theoretical and practical foundations, thus enabling graduates to cope with whatever challenges in services design and implementation they may meet in the working environment.

The School of the Built Environment’s on-going commitment to high quality and innovative research has been recognised with a high ranking in the last two UK Government Research Assessment Exercises (RAE). We are one of only seven built environment Schools in the UK, and the only one in Scotland to receive an RAE Grade 5 rating in both 1996 and 2001. With a high proportion of the staff research-active, researchers and postgraduate students benefit from access to extensive laboratory and computing facilities.
