Time-of-Flight Ranging/Imaging

  • Programme type: Research
  • Study location:
  • Edinburgh

Overview

We have developed a unique instrument capable of accurate distance measurements. This instrument measures the time taken by a picosecond laser pulse to travel to an object and back – the so-called ‘time-of-flight’ approach. This technique relies on the detection, by the highly sensitive SPAD detector, of the low light levels scattered back from the target surface. By using the high statistical accuracy inherent in time-correlated single-photon counting, a measurement accuracy of >0.01mm has been achieved over a range of tens of metres. In parallel, the group has also developed a novel multi-wavelength system which has identified targets at ranges of several km from photon return data.
