Marine Spatial Planning MSc/Diploma/Certificate
- Delivery: Full Time, Part Time
- Programme type: Taught Programme
- Study location:
- Edinburgh
- Entry date:
- September
Overview
There is a clear need for provision of MSc training in this broad subject area and, in Scotland, there are extensive examples of established and new, highly-important industries utilizing the space and resources of the marine environment (maritime trade, ports and harbours, fisheries, oil industry, aggregate extraction, naval military requirements, aquaculture, conservation, marine renewable energy production, tourism and recreation).
This MSc programme offers one core course entitled ‘Strategic Spatial Vision Project’. The programme structure allows for optional and relevant courses each semester from amongst the University’s postgraduate syllabus so that a ‘tailored’ programme can be constructed.
This MSc programme in ‘Marine Spatial Planning’ includes a wide range of national and international case studies and will incorporate the broad expertise of staff from The School of the Built Environment (Planning section), The School of Management and Languages (Maritime Logistics group), The School of Life Sciences (Marine and Environmental group) and the International Centre for Island Technology in Orkney (marine renewable energy and marine management studies). Advice will be given on the most appropriate courses available from the different Schools of the University in topics ranging across scientific, engineering, economics and management courses.
Programme duration
MSc programmes last for one year (September to August inclusive) and include a substantial research project. The Diploma covers the same classes as the MSc but lasts for just 9 months (September to May inclusive). Students admitted to the Diploma programme and who perform well in the taught courses may be invited to transfer to the MSc programme.
