Actuarial Mathematics & Statistics

Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics was the first department of its kind in the UK and is now one of the world’s leading centres for teaching and research in these areas, achieving Grade 5 in the most recent UK Research Assessment.  No other centre for actuarial study achieved such a high grade.

The wide variety of taught programmes and research opportunities offered is enough to satisfy anyone interested in taking forward a career in actuarial science, financial mathematics or statistics.

In this regard, as with other departments at Heriot-Watt, the active links to employers in the public and private sectors are strong and interaction is promoted and encouraged.  This forms a backdrop to a lively employment scene for those with actuarial expertise, as the government and the financial services industry respond to global economic shifts.  Heriot-Watt actuaries, financial mathematicians and statisticians are therefore extremely well placed to take advantage of the ever increasing demand for their skills and expertise.
