Overview

We are internationally recognised for the study of transition economies through our Centre for Economic Reform and Transformation (CERT), with a particular strength in applied microeconomic research. Enterprise restructuring, corporate and public finance, labour markets, EU enlargement, foreign trade policy and higher education reform in transition economies are just some of the research interests within the Centre.

Research in industrial economics Labour economics research includes the informal sector and labour markets in developing and transition countries.

Applied Econometrics

Instrumental variables estimators and testing procedures for the software package Stata.

Development Economics 

Middle-Eastern economies, insurance in developing countries.

Energy Economics

Energy efficiency and utilisation production, resources.

Industrial Economics

Research includes the performance of regulated industries, particularly water, and enterprise restructuring in transition economies.

Macroeconomics

Monetary policy fiscal policy, exchange rate regimes, EMU, and gravity models of trade.

Entry Requirements

We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates.

English language requirements

If your first language is not English, or your first degree was not taught in English, we’ll need to see evidence of your English language ability. The minimum requirement for English language is IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. We offer a range of English language courses to help you meet the English language requirement prior to starting your masters programme:

  • 2 semesters English (for IELTS of 4.5-5.0);
  • 12 weeks English (for IELTS of 5.5);
  • 6 weeks English (for IELTS 5.5*-6.0). (*minimum 5.5 reading and writing)
