Food Science, Safety And Health MSc/Diploma/Certificate
Duration
MSc programmes last for one year (September to August inclusive) and include a substantial research project. The Diploma covers the same classes as the MSc but lasts for just 9 months (September to May inclusive). Students admitted to the Diploma programme and who perform well in the taught courses may be invited to transfer to the MSc programme.
Overview
The MSc/PG Diploma programme in Food Science, Safety and Health is tailored to take advantage of the excellent career prospects available in the food industry. Producing, processing and marketing innovative consumer-ready foods which meet nutritional guidelines promotes a concomitant need for manufacturers to employ graduates with training in these areas or to provide advanced training to educate their technical or managerial professionals in emerging issues in the food and beverage sciences, nutrition and health.
As a student on the programme you can develop the knowledge and practical skills that are associated with key topics of food science through studying core courses in food chemistry, food microbiology and the management of food quality. The programme is closely aligned with the needs of the industry and is accredited by the Institute of Food Science and Technology, UK.

Entry Requirements
This programme prepares students with a flexible high quality approach to postgraduate learning which offers the potential for enhanced career progression within the food industry. For MSc entry, candidates must have a First or Second Class Honours Degree in a suitable science or engineering subject (for example, Biological Sciences, Chemistry or Chemical/Mechanical Engineering). For Diploma entry, candidates must hold a degree, preferably at Honours level, but lesser qualifications, including substantial relevant work experience, will be considered.
English language requirements
If your first language is not English, or your first degree was not taught in English, we’ll need to see evidence of your English language ability. The minimum requirement for English language is IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. We offer a range of English language courses to help you meet the English language requirement prior to starting your masters programme:
- 2 semesters English (for IELTS of 4.5-5.0);
- 12 weeks English (for IELTS of 5.5);
- 6 weeks English (for IELTS 5.5*-6.0). (*minimum 5.5 reading and writing)
