Photonics EngD

Research

Duration

Four years. EPSRC and Industry funding is provided for the duration. It may also be possible to study part-time over an extended period.

Overview

The Engineering Doctorate Centre in Optics and Photonics Technologies is a collaboration between Heriot-Watt, Strathclyde, St Andrews and Glasgow Universities. The Centre is based at Heriot-Watt and covers a range of projects dealing with applications of photonics in the areas of communications, sensing, and manufacturing. More detail about Engineering Doctorates can be found here. Each project is carried out in close collaboration with a sponsoring company; the list of companies currently supporting the centre is given below:

Supporting companies
  • Agilent
  • Alcatel
  • AWE
  • BAE Systems
  • Bookham
  • Edinburgh Instruments
  • Image Automation
  • Kamelian
  • Melles Griot
  • Nortel
  • NPL
  • OptoSci
  • Oxford Fiber Optic Tools
  • Point Source
  • QinetiQ
  • Renishaw
  • Rofin Sinar
  • Scalar Technologies
  • Terahertz Photonics
  • Thales
Support from EPSRC and industry means that we are able to offer full fees plus a stipend of at least £20,090 per annum (non-taxable) for eligible students accepted on to the course. Successful candidates will work closely with their chosen sponsoring company, normally carrying out the majority of their project work whilst based at that company.

A significant taught course element is included in the Engineering Doctorate qualification, which in our case consists of a combination of technical, management, business and transferable skills courses. These will be tailored to the particular student's requirements, but with the aim of providing the students with the knowledge and skills for senior management positions. These courses will be primarily drawn from the Heriot-Watt/St. Andrews MSc course in Photonics and Optoelectronic Devices, together with business courses from the Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt. The business courses will be delivered by distance-learning, whereas the technical courses will be delivered in a four month session at the start of the period of study, followed by shorter periods of coursework distributed throughout the four years of the EngD study.

Further details on this course can be found at http://www.engd.hw.ac.uk/

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for candidates with at least an upper second BSc, MPhys or MSc in Physics or Applied Physics, or BEng or MEng in Electronic or Mechanical Engineering, or a cognate topic (or its equivalent) from a British or overseas university, or with lesser qualifications combined with relevant experience. Applications from company employees in the UK or elsewhere are also welcomed.

English language requirements

If your first language is not English, or your first degree was not taught in English, we’ll need to see evidence of your English language ability. The minimum requirement for English language is IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. We offer a range of English language courses to help you meet the English language requirement prior to starting your masters programme:

  • 2 semesters English (for IELTS of 4.5-5.0);
